David Calvert:
KIC Artistic Director David served an apprenticeship as
an aircraft fitter at Short Bros in Belfast before turning
to the study of English Literature at Queens University
where he received a B.A. Hons. He began working in the
professional theatre in 1982, with work ranging from the
Druid Theatre Company in Galway to the Lyric Theatre,
Belfast, as well as television drama work for the BBC
and consultancy roles on the Channel 4 Schools Programme,
off the Wall and the same channels Long War Season
in 1994.
Since 1988 David has concentrated on community drama
and has served as Project Director with Neighbourhood
Open Workshops from 1989-1994 and on the Board of Directors
at Art and Research Exchange (A.R.E.) and C.A.F.E. (Creative
Activity for Everyone). He now works full time as Artistic
Director of The KIC Project.
Of his role as KIC Artistic Director, David says, I
am seeking my own understanding of the relevance and meaning
of theatre through the work I do with young people. I
wish to collaborate genuinely with young people in the
act of making theatre. This means I must honestly unlearn
what I know on the workshop floor with each encounter.
I have enough knowledge and experience to prepare the
floor for things to happen; beyond that is the unforeseen
and the chance to be most yourself.
