New Mutiny: Preparatory KIC Training

New Mutiny offers an ideal introduction to KIC training and theatre-making.
The project provides an introductory training in KIC physical theatre disciplines for teenagers in the 13-15 year age band. In previous years, this preparatory training has enabled young people to progress to KIC core training with appropriate physical conditioning and a rudimentary understanding of movement and physical image disciplines.
In 2003 18 teenagers from KIC outreach and schools projects devised and performed DEEP ROLLING at The Old Museum Arts Centre, Belfast. 6 members of the New Mutiny 'class of 2003' progressed to the KIC Core Training Group, with 3 of the 6 working as volunteers on KIC outreach projects. So, for some, membership of New Mutiny can lead to a 15 month learning curve in KIC physical theatre work and end in a role as a skilled company volunteer.
In 2004 New Mutiny had 14 members who completed KIC outreach or school programmes. The production THE PLAYHOUSE OF THE CHILDREN revisited original material devised by students from the KIC outreach project based at Strangford Integrated College. 9 of the original cast joined members of the KIC Island Youth Theatre Project to present a physical theatre exploration of the growing pains of a child entering the 'grown-up' world of secondary school. This production exhibited the skills of KIC beginners who were developing original stories and performing in the KIC physical theatre style.
In 2005 New Mutiny devised and performed PIRANHA, a story of a child's escape from the oppressions of daily life into an ancient world of struggle and survival. This group again saw the combination of skills and ideas from young people from several KIC outreach projects.
